Biography

Carlson Hatton (b. 1974, American) is a Los Angeles based painter and arts educator. His psychologically charged paintings explore the many layers that constitute daily life. Memories, urges, regret and the influence of a reality that’s lost visual coherence set the stage for his stacked and sprawling portraits. Densely layered compositions offer moments of recognition while continuously threatening to collapse under their own weight into a realm of abstraction and gesture. Hatton filters through advertising, art history and documentation of daily life to create imagery that is highly saturated, densely layered and designed to be deciphered and discovered.

Exhibitions include: Shoshana Wayne, Patrick Painter, Torrance Art Museum, Bonnefanten Art Museum (NL), Oxnard Art Museum, and TW Art in Australia. He recently completed a large permanent art installation at a Metro Station in Los Angeles that’s scheduled to open in 2021.
